London | Russian and Belarusian players have been allowed to participate as neutral athletes at Wimbledon this year. The All England Lawn Tennis Club on Friday lifted a ban on players from both countries that was imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

Athletes from Russia and Belarus may participate as neutral athletes provided they comply with conditions such as not receiving any funding from Russia or Belarus (including sponsorship from companies that are state-run or controlled) and Not supporting the country of Russia and/or Belarus or their administration and leaders.

This decision has been taken after positive discussions with the British Government, the Lawn Tennis Association and international stakeholders in tennis.

The Lawn Tennis Association said that Russian and Belarusian players and support staff who want to participate in Wimbledon and practice tournaments must sign a neutrality declaration. Flags, signs or other actions supporting Russia and Belarus will not be tolerated at all action sites.(IANS)
