WTC Final – India ignores the lessons of 1979

The Oval (London), . When Australia wrapped up their second innings in the ongoing World Test Championship final and set India a challenging fourth innings target of 444, the memory came strangely to the 1979 Test match. The venue was the same, The Oval.
India was still involved, but it was England, not Australia.
The home team opted to bat and took a 103-run first innings lead. They then scored 334 for eight before English captain Mike Brearley declared, leaving India 438 to win on the fourth day. By the end of play the tourists were 76 without loss, with Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan at the crease.
Australia had a first innings lead of 173 in the current Test, but they too called off their second venture after the fall of their eighth wicket. The target set for India was not the same as the one 44 years earlier – 444 – although on this occasion, with the sixth-day reserve as a substitute, they had more than two days to spare. But after that the similarity fell apart.
Gavaskar and Chauhan aimed to lay the foundation for the bigger challenge ahead on the fourth day and fearlessly marched towards their goal.
