New Delhi. 20 leading tech companies like Microsoft, Meta, Google, X, Amazon and OpenAI have pledged to help prevent misleading AI content and deepfakes in elections in India and other countries across the world this year.

This year more than four billion people from more than 40 countries will vote.

At the Munich Security Conference (MSC), companies signed a tech pact to combat fraudulent use of AI in the 2024 elections.

“The Tech Pact to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in the 2024 Elections is a set of commitments to deploy technology to counter harmful AI-generated content designed to deceive voters,” he said in a statement.

The agreement includes digital content that includes AI-generated audio, video, and images that deceptively alter, or provide false information about, the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders in a democratic election.

Signers of the agreement include Adobe, Amazon, Anthropic, Arm, ElevenLabs, Google, IBM, Inflexion AI, LinkedIn, McAfee, Meta, Microsoft, Nota, OpenAI, Snap Inc., Stability AI, TikTok, Trend Micro, TruePic and Are.

Kent Walker, president of global affairs at Google, said Google has been supporting election integrity for years and this settlement reflects the industry’s commitment to fighting election misinformation.

Participating companies agreed to commitments such as developing and implementing technologies to mitigate risks related to misleading AI election content, including open-source tools where appropriate and understanding the risks that exist in relation to ‘misleading AI election content’ For the model to be assessed within the scope of this agreement.

Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Ambassador Dr. Christoph Heusgen said, ‘Elections are the heartbeat of democracy. “The technology agreement to combat fraudulent use of AI in the 2024 elections is an important step forward in advancing election integrity, enhancing social resilience, and building trusted tech practices.”

“As society embraces the benefits of AI, it’s our responsibility to help ensure these tools don’t become weaponized in elections,” said Brad Smith, vice president and president of Microsoft.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, said that in democratic processes around the world, every citizen and company has a responsibility to protect free and fair elections.

He said, we must understand the risks that AI content poses to the process.
