Barauni Stage-1 project permanently closed

Bihar: Patna. NTPC has permanently closed the 220 MW capacity Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-1. In the information given to the stock market on Saturday, the company has said that the operations of NTPC Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-1 (two units of 110-110 MW) will be closed permanently from March 31, 2024. This power house has two units (Units 6 and 7) of 110 MW each.

At the time of acquisition the capacity was 720 MW.

NTPC had acquired Barauni Thermal Power Station (720 MW) from Bihar State Power Generation Company on December 15, 2018. At the time of acquisition, this 720 MW coal-based power plant had two units of 110 MW and two units of 250 MW under construction. The power plant consisted of Phase-I (2×110 MW) and Phase-II (2×250 MW) projects. Union Power Minister RK Singh had dedicated the 500 MW (two units of 250-250 MW) capacity unit of Phase-II here to the nation in November 2021.

According to sources, production of electricity from both the units, which were very old and dilapidated, was very expensive. Apart from this, keeping the safety standards in mind, it has been decided to close them. Now only 500 MW electricity will be produced from the eighth and ninth units of Barauni NTPC Stage-II with 250-250 MW capacity each.
