DGFT, an arm of the commerce ministry, is working on formulating norms for providing licenses to importers of laptops and computers in a smooth manner. An officer gave this information. The government has issued an order making the license mandatory for the import of laptops, tablets and other PC products. Apart from security flaws in hardware in foreign devices, this step has also been taken for the purpose of promoting domestic manufacturing. For the import of these items, license/permission will have to be obtained from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) from November 1.
Government should announce objective criteria
Talking on the matter, the official said, we are working on the license issue. Its purpose is to make it easier to obtain a license for import. In similar cases, past performance etc. of a company has been taken into consideration for granting license. Import curbs will help India keep a close watch on the places where products are coming from. Research organization Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) had also said that the government should announce objective criteria for granting licenses to importers.
All steps must be taken to avoid market disruption
GTRI co-founder Ajay Srivastava had said, personal computers, laptops and tablets connect us to education, business, entertainment and other information. Government should take all steps to avoid supply shortage and market disruption. One way to do this, he said, is to announce objective criteria, which will form the basis of granting licences.
