What is the whole matter?
Francis was traveling in his car from Udupi to Mangalore on 29 January. On reaching the toll plaza in Hejamady, he realized that his FASTag card balance was low, so he started searching the helpline numbers on the internet. He found a helpline number online which was said to be FASTag helpline. According to media reports, when he called the helpline number, the person in front introduced himself as a representative of Paytm FASTag and promised to help.
looted lakh rupees
To recharge the FASTag, he asked Francis for the one-time password. Francis told him the OTP. After this, within minutes, Francis started getting transaction messages one after the other. First came the message of deduction of Rs 49,000. After this, the message of deduction of Rs 19,999, 19,998, 9,999 and 1,000 rupees came. Overall Francis lost Rs 99,997.
After realizing that he has been scammed. Francis then filed a cyber fraud complaint. In this report, he told that the scammer had asked him to download a mobile app and after that money was deducted from his account.
What is this new FASTag scam?
This cyber fraud was not a scam of FASTag recharge helpline number. It was phishing or fake link scam. To cheat people, cyber criminals create fake websites that look similar to the real website. These websites contain links that hack people’s devices. In Francis’ case, he clicked on a fake website and contacted the number provided on that website. On the other hand cyber fraudsters were looking for someone like this and looted all his money on the pretext of helping him in FASTag recharge.
