Flipkart Hails Personal Data Protection Bill 2023: Flipkart has said that it supports the government’s stand on the Data Protection Bill. The ‘Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023’ with provisions to determine the accountability of data security was approved by the Parliament on Wednesday. In this Bill, provisions have been made for the protection of digital personal data and enforcement of general and in some cases special obligations on the bodies engaged in the promotion of personal data. This bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha on August 7. Personal data can be processed under this bill only if the individual has given consent for the same. Those who collect data have to protect it and delete it after use.

Flipkart’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar said, I think this is a very good step. We are of the same opinion on this and since it has just been passed, we are reviewing it. All our data is in India, so it is very important for us. He further said, therefore, we will consider this bill, read it and make sure that if it needs improvement, we will continue to do so.
This has been discussed for many hours in many forums
Earlier, Communications and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said about the bill that it has been discussed for many hours in several forums including the Standing Committee of Parliament in the last several years. He said that 48 organizations and 39 departments and ministries discussed it and 24,000 suggestions and ideas were received for it.
User consent required for personal data
Individuals will have the right to seek details regarding their data, its maintenance, etc. after the law comes into force. Once the law is enacted, many entities, both public and private, will be required to obtain consent from users to collect and process personal information. Personal data can be processed under this bill only if the individual has given consent for the same. Altogether about 21,660 suggestions were received on the draft and each of them was considered.
Bill aims to make companies accountable
The work on this bill started on August 27 last year after the Supreme Court’s order. The Bill aims to make entities such as internet companies, mobile apps and private companies more responsible and accountable regarding the collection, storage and processing of personal information of citizens under the ‘right to privacy’.
