New Delhi. Popular teenage chat platform Discord is laying off 17 percent of its workforce, or about 170 employees, across various departments.
In an internal memo obtained by the Verge, Discord CEO Jason Citron blamed over-hiring for the decision at an all-party meeting held late Thursday.
“We grew rapidly and expanded our workforce 5 times faster since 2020,” Citron wrote in the memo.
“We have taken on more projects and become less efficient in our way of working,” he said. Today, we are becoming clear on the need to sharpen our focus and improve the way we work together to bring greater agility to our organization. For this reason we have decided to reduce the size of the workforce.
Last August, Discord laid off 4 percent of its workforce, or about 40 employees, as part of a restructuring plan. Discord has raised a total of nearly $1 billion in funding to date. Citroën said in an internal memo that affected employees will receive five months of salary, five months of benefits continuation, three months of outplacement services and equity vesting of awards scheduled for Feb. 1, 2024.
He said, ‘I am confident that this will best position us to continue building a strong and profitable business that provides amazing products for our users and supports our mission for years to come.’
