Dispatch of Toyota’s Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux is currently closed

New Delhi : Japanese car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has currently suspended the dispatch of Innova Crysta, Fortuner and HiLux amid irregularities in diesel engine certification testing. Toyota appointed Toyota Industries Corporation (TYCO) to develop the diesel engine. On Monday, Tico informed Toyota about the irregularities in certification. It said that a special investigation committee set up to investigate possible certification irregularities said that irregularities were committed during the horsepower output certification testing for three diesel engines delivered to Tico by Toyota.
How did the testing go wrong?
A statement issued by Toyota Motor Corporation said that during the certification test, the horsepower output performance of the engines was measured using an electronic control unit (ECU) with software different from that used for mass production. This was done so that results could be measured in a more convenient way with less variation in displaying values.
Toyota uses diesel engines in 10 models
Toyota uses diesel engines in at least 10 models internationally. There are six models from Japan. At the same time, there are three models in India like Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux. These three models account for about one-third of Toyota Kirloskar’s total sales in India and are well-liked here as large luxury cars.
What does the company say
Speaking to the media, a Toyota Kirloskar spokesperson said that the irregularities are related to ‘smoothing’ of the power and torque curves, but not the reason for any rumor or claim on horsepower, torque or other powertrain-related values. Toyota Kirloskar spokesperson has assured that apart from this, there is no impact on emissions or safety of the affected vehicles. Meanwhile, questions are also being raised that now that the dispatches of Innova Crysta, Fortuner and HiLux have been suspended, will the company continue to produce and take orders for these cars and will it be transparent on the power curves for those buyers? This will ensure communication to those who are waiting for the delivery of their Innova, Fortuner or HiLux.
Taking new orders will continue
Toyota spokesperson further said that in the case of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd (TKM), the dispatch of the affected cars will be temporarily suspended. However, taking new orders will continue. Dispatch has been suspended for cars that have already been dispatched but have not yet been distributed to the customer. He said that we will carefully explain this situation to our customers. After this, we will ensure registration and delivery for those customers. Toyota Kirloskar Motor said in its statement that TKM regrets any inconvenience and concern caused to customers and stakeholders due to this irregularity.
