According to the report of news agency Bhasha, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 that the government is working on developing electric highways as it is economically practical. He had earlier said that it was his dream to build India’s first electric highway between Delhi and Jaipur.

The Union Minister said in the annual conference of Delhi Vehicle Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) that my view regarding the electric highway is that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will give the right of way. Today I spoke to the Electricity Ministry. I am trying to get electricity at the rate of Rs 3.50 per unit, otherwise the commercial electricity rate is Rs 11 per unit. He said that it is easy for the Power Ministry to provide electricity to a government company at a cheaper rate.

The Union Minister said that the electric highway is very practical economically. I will give all rights to those private sector investors who are going to invest (in the electric highway project). He said that the work of construction of electric cable will be done by private investors and NHAI will collect electricity charges like toll.

Electric highways provide electric traction for vehicles in much the same way as railways. It is based on the technology prevalent in a large number of countries such as Sweden and Norway. This includes the provision of a power cable that can be used by a vehicle that is equipped with this type of technology. The vehicle will use the electricity received from this cable to run. At present the ministry is evaluating various technologies. He said that we are building the first electric highway project in Nagpur on an experimental basis.

The minister said that India is the fastest growing major economy and the automobile industry is the pride of the country. He said that the automobile industry is currently worth Rs 12.50 lakh crore, which is much more than Rs 4.15 lakh crore in 2014. He took over the post of Road Transport and Highways Minister in 2014. Gadkari said that the import of crude oil is continuously increasing. The country needs to find a solution to this crisis.
