Elephants again created havoc in Bhaski village of Bokaro, broke the boundary wall of the former chief’s house and trampled the crops.

Kasmar (Bokaro): A herd of wild elephants again created havoc in Bhaski village of Jaridih block of Bokaro district of Jharkhand. At around 3 am on Monday morning, a herd of wild elephants broke the boundary wall of the house of former chief Sunita Devi. Apart from this, the wheat and corn crops grown on about three acres of his land were trampled and eaten. Wild elephants have created havoc in this village for the second time in the last four days. According to the victim’s family members and villagers, a herd of about 22 wild elephants entered the village at around 3 am in the morning. Before the villagers could know and understand anything, the herd of elephants started creating havoc.

Drive away elephants by bursting crackers and playing drums
The villagers gathered during the riot. Started driving away the elephants by bursting crackers and playing drums. After receiving the information, within a short time the elephant drive team also reached the spot and with the help of the villagers, chased the herd towards the dense forest of nearby Roriya. Here, the villagers are scared of repeated attacks by wild elephants in the village and have raised the demand for security. The victim former chief said that the problem of wild elephant menace has persisted in this area for the last several years, but the government has not yet taken any concrete steps to protect it. Due to this, the villagers always remain suspicious and are often forced to do night vigil.

Demand to build elephant watch tower
Here, social workers Rathuram Mahato and Kashinath Mahato, residents of Roria of Bhaski Panchayat, have demanded the forest department to immediately build an elephant watch tower in Roria village. He said that the villagers had written an application in this regard to the Bokaro DFO about two months ago, but till now no concrete initiative has been taken towards its construction. Shri Mahato said that the construction of watch tower can help the villagers in monitoring the wild elephants and protecting the village. He has also demanded to provide adequate quantity of firecrackers, torches, drums and other necessary materials to the villagers.
