Digital India & Costly Internet Data: Internet and data becoming expensive is becoming an obstacle in the way of realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of Digital India. Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that the rising cost of data and equipment is a matter of concern for the rapid spread of digitization. This comment of the Union Minister has come in the backdrop of the country’s second largest telecom company Bharti Airtel recently increasing the minimum monthly recharge plan by about 57 percent.
Rising data charges a matter of concern
Chandrasekhar said, the increase in the cost of data or equipment is a matter of concern, as it hinders digitization. The minister said that he was not aware of the increase in rates of mobile services by Airtel. The ministry has approached telecom regulator TRAI to ascertain the short-term or long-term impact of the hike. He said that the Russia-Ukraine war has affected the prices worldwide and there is a need to examine the impact of the data price.
Airtel recharge became expensive
Bharti Airtel has increased the price of its minimum recharge by almost 57 percent to Rs 155 for 28 days mobile phone service plan in eight circles including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh West. The company has discontinued its Rs 99 minimum recharge plan, under which it offered 200 megabytes of data and calls at 2.5 paise per second. In the company’s new Rs 155 plan, one GB data and 300 SMS are being offered along with unlimited calling. (with language input)
