Former Intel India chief Avtar Saini dies in road accident, Mumbai News in Hindi

Mumbai . Avtar Saini, former head of software giant Intel, has died in a road accident. Officials said he died after being hit by a speeding cab while riding a bicycle in Navi Mumbai.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning. Saini, 68, of Chembur, was cycling with a group of cycling enthusiasts on Palm Beach Road in Nerul when he was hit from behind by a speeding cab on the road, police said. After the collision he fell down and got injured.

The accident occurred around 5.50 am near Nerul Junction and Seawoods Estate signal. Saini was sent to the nearby D.Y. Patil was taken to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

His fellow cyclists told the police that after the collision with the cab, Avtar Saini was thrown off the road and suffered serious injuries which proved fatal.

Immediately after the accident, cab driver Hrishikesh Khade attempted to flee the spot and drove the cab for about a kilometre, but failed to go further as Saini’s cycle got stuck under the front wheel of the car.

Other motorists nearby caught him and handed him over to the NRI Coastal police station, which lodged an FIR and filed various charges including rash driving, culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

According to his friends and former colleagues, Avtar Saini was an acclaimed chip designer and is credited with the development of the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors. He led the design of the Pentium processor.

Avtar Saini, a member of the Chembur Amateur Cycling Group for a decade, lost his wife three years ago. He has a son and a daughter, who are in America.

Avtar Saini joins the growing list of prominent personalities or billionaires who have died in tragic accidents in recent times.
