From only two seats in 1984 to ‘triple century’ in 2019

BJP Foundation Day: On Foundation Day, first of all let us know, how did Bharatiya Janata Party start? By what name was BJP known in the initial days? In fact, after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had resigned from the Hindu Mahasabha. After that he founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh on 21 October 1951. Its founding members were Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Professor Balraj Madhok and Deendayal Upadhyay. At that time Deepak election symbol was allotted to this party. After Mukherjee’s death, many people of Jan Sangh became president. In 1967, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay became its president. After that, Atal Bihari Vajpayee took over the post of President in 1972 and then Lal Krishna Advani in 1977.

Jan Sangh merged with Janata Party in 1977

In 1977, Bharatiya Jana Sangh merged with the Janata Party. In fact, at that time, for the first time, a non-Congress government was formed at the Centre. In which a condition of merger was laid for other parties to join. On the basis of conditions, Jan Sangh also merged with Janata Party. In Morarji Desai’s government, Bajpayee was made the Foreign Minister and Lal Krishna Advani was made the Information and Broadcasting Minister. However, the coalition government could not last long and the Morarji government fell in 1979. After that, the very next year i.e. on 6 April 1980, Bharatiya Janata Party was established. The reason behind choosing this day was that Mahatma Gandhi had broken the salt law on 6th April. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first president of BJP. Bajpayee ji held the reins of BJP for 6 consecutive years. After that Lal Krishna Advani was made the President of BJP.

In 1984, BJP hoisted the flag on two seats.

For four years after the party was established in 1980, BJP did not get a single seat in the Lok Sabha. But in 1984, BJP created history by winning two seats. The interesting thing in this election was that neither Bajpayee ji nor Lal Krishna Advani had won on both the seats. Rather, Amritlal Kalidas Patel had won from Mehsana in Gujarat and Chandupatiya Janga Reddy had won from Hanamkonda in Andhra Pradesh.

BJP’s seats increased continuously after 1984.

After winning two seats in 1984, BJP’s power continued to increase in the Lok Sabha. In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, BJP won 85 seats. After that, BJP got 120 seats in 1991, 161 seats in 1996 and 182 seats in 1999. However, BJP faced loss in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and the party got only 138 seats. After that, BJP’s graph kept falling for a few days and in the 2009 elections, BJP got only 116 seats. In 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Narendra Modi created history and won 282 seats out of 543 Lok Sabha seats. For the first time, BJP got majority in the Lok Sabha on its own. Then, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, BJP contested the 2019 elections, in which the party scored a triple century and captured 303 seats alone. Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for the second consecutive time. Now under his leadership, BJP is beating the pace of Lok Sabha elections in 2024. This time, the BJP party including PM Modi has claimed to win 370 seats alone, while with the allies it has shown the strength to win more than 400 seats.
