Google vs CCI: After the Supreme Court refused to stay the order of the Competition Commission, global technology giant Google has said that it is reviewing the order and will cooperate with the commission.
A Google spokesperson said the company is reviewing Thursday’s decision by the Supreme Court. He said, this decision is limited to the demand for interim relief and no decision has been pronounced on the merits of our appeal.
Google has appealed to the Supreme Court for not granting interim relief from the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on the penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for non-compliance with fair competition standards. But there has been no relief from there either.
The competition regulator had slapped a fine of Rs 1,337 crore on US-based Google for abusing its dominance in the mobile phone ecosystem through Android. The appeal for interim relief against this order was turned down by the NCLAT.
A Google spokesperson said that the Android ecosystem has greatly benefited Indian consumers and phone makers and has played a key role in India’s digital transformation. “We are committed to our users and partners and will cooperate with the CCI as per our appeal,” he said.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud gave Google a week’s time to deposit 10 per cent of the fine of Rs 1,337 crore as per the CCI order.
