New Rules – Police Verification of SIM Dealers Mandatory : The Government of India has taken a big step to curb the increasing incidents of fake calls and cyber fraud. The government has made a big announcement regarding the telecom sector. Police and biometric verification has been made mandatory for dealers selling SIM cards. Along with this, it has also been decided to end the system of purchasing SIM cards in bulk.

Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has said that to prevent fraud, the government has made police verification of SIM card dealers mandatory and the provision of giving connections in bulk has now been discontinued. The minister said that the government has closed 52 lakh mobile connections. The names of 67,000 dealers have been blacklisted. Since May 2023, 300 FIRs have been registered against SIM card dealers.

Vaishnav said that WhatsApp itself has blocked around 66,000 accounts that were involved in fraudulent acts. He said, now we have made police verification of the SIM card dealer mandatory to curb fraud. A fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed on the dealer who violates the rules.

The Union Minister said that there are 10 lakh SIM dealers and they will be given enough time for police verification. He said that the Department of Telecom has also stopped the service of giving ‘connections’ in bulk. Instead, a new concept of business connection will be introduced.

Apart from this, KYC (Know Your Customer) of businesses and KYC of the person taking the SIM will also be done, Vaishnav said. KYC helps in authenticating the identity and address of an institution or investor.
