Cyber Crime Against Children : During 2019 to 2021, 2,784 cases of cyber crime against children have been registered in the country. This information has been received from the figures presented by the government in the Lok Sabha recently. Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in a written reply to Hasnain Masoodi’s question in the Lok Sabha. Vaishnav said that the government’s policies are aimed at ensuring an open, secure and reliable and accountable internet for all its users.
Incidents of cybercrime have increased against all people including children
Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that with the expansion of the internet and more and more Indians coming online, incidents of cyber crime against all people including children have increased. He informed that according to the data published by the National Crime Records Bureau, 306, 1102 and 1376 cases of cyber crime against children have been registered during 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively. The Minister of Electronics and Information Technology said that the Information Technology Act 2000 and the rules made thereunder include provisions to make the cyber space safe and accountable for children.
What are the provisions in Section 67B of the Information Technology Act?
Vaishnav said Section 67B of the Information Technology Act provides for publishing or transmitting electronic material, text or images depicting children in pornographic acts, downloading, advertising, promoting or presenting children in a derogatory manner, Along with this, there is a provision of penalty for electronically recording sexual abuse. He said that the offense under this can lead to imprisonment of up to five years for the first conviction and imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of up to ten lakh rupees for subsequent convictions and it is a cognizable offence.
