Increased demand for sports utility vehicles in July 2023, sales of automobile companies

New Delhi : The month of July 2023 proved to be excellent for the automobile companies of India. In this month, due to the increase in demand for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in the domestic car market, sales of various models of automakers were increased. Among domestic vehicle makers, Maruti Suzuki India and Hyundai’s total vehicle sales increased by single digit in the month of July. The highest demand in this month was for sports utility vehicles (SUVs). Due to the demand for SUVs, Mahindra & Mahindra’s sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market increased by 29 percent in July. At the same time, there was a slight increase in the wholesale sales of Tata Motors. However, overall it can be said that in July 2023, automobile companies of India made record sales of vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki vehicle sales up 6 percent
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) said that its total domestic passenger vehicle sales in July stood at 1,52,126 units as against 1,42,850 units in July 2022, a six per cent increase. Multi-utility vehicles like Brezza, Ertiga, Franks, Grand Vitara, Jimny and XL6 sold 62,049 units in July, which is more than double the 23,272 units sold in July 2022.
Maruti’s small car sales decline
However, sales of small cars like Alto, S-Presso declined to 9,590 units from 20,333 units in July 2022. Apart from this, sales of compact cars like Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis and Swift also declined by 21 per cent to 67,102 units as against 84,818 units in July 2022. This shows that bigger size cars are being preferred more in India than Maruti Suzuki’s small vehicles.
Marginal increase in sales of Hyundai vehicles
At the same time, Maruti Suzuki’s rival Hyundai’s domestic sales increased marginally to 50,701 units in July, compared to 50,500 units in July 2022. Hyundai Motor India Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tarun Garg said a strong SUV segment contributed to domestic sales crossing 50,000 units in July. In this, Exeter has given more strength.
Record breaking sales of Mahindra models
On the other hand, if we talk about Mahindra & Mahindra, it has sold record breaking vehicles during the month of July. The company’s vehicle division president Vijay Nakra said that July has been a record breaking month for us. We are elated to have registered the highest ever domestic sales of 36,205 SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) in a single month. In a record time of 20 months, the number of XUV700 buyers crossed one lakh. Also, since the launch of the Scorpio brand in July, the sales have been highest in a single month.
Toyota is also happy with the sale of vehicles
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) posted its best ever monthly sales of 21,911 units in July. In July, the company’s domestic wholesale sales stood at 20,759 units, while exports stood at 1,152 units. TKM’s previous best month was May, 2023, when the company sold 20,410 units. MG Motor said its retail sales grew 25 per cent to 5,012 units in July. The company had sold 4,013 units in July 2022. MG Motor said that sales in the electric vehicle (EV) segment accounted for 34 per cent of total vehicle sales.
Honda disappointed with 28 percent decline in vehicle sales
Honda Cars India’s July wholesale sales declined by 28 per cent to 4,864 units. The company said that it had sold 6,784 vehicles in July 2022. Vehicle exports also declined to 1,112 units in July, which was 2,104 units in July 2022.
Bajaj Auto sales down 2%
Bajaj Auto’s domestic sales in the two-wheeler segment declined by two per cent to 1,79,263 units in July from 1,82,956 units in July 2022. Suzuki Motorcycle India sold 80,309 units in July in the domestic market.
Great sales of Royal Enfield
Royal Enfield’s domestic sales grew by 42 per cent to 66,062 units in July from 46,529 units in July 2022. Hero MotoCorp’s total sales fell 12 per cent to 3,91,310 units in July. The company sold 4,45,580 units in July 2022. The company’s domestic sales stood at 3,71,204 units, which was 4,30,684 units in July 2022.
