In this wave, former Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, who had never tasted defeat in any election, was defeated by Congress from Samastihpur Lok Sabha seat.

When elections were fought against wishes

Karpoori Thakur got 2 lakh 19 thousand 224 votes as Lok Dal candidate. Whereas Congress’s Ramdev Rai got more than three lakh 27 thousand votes. Karpoori Thakur stood second by getting 38.65 percent votes. Whereas 57.76 percent votes fell in favor of Congress candidate Ramdev Rai who won. At that time Samastipur Lok Sabha seat was a general seat. Experts say that Karpoori Thakur was pressurized by Lok Dal to become the candidate from Samastipur against his wishes.

Accepting the party’s instructions, Karpoori Thakur became the candidate from Samastipur. There was a wave of sympathy in favor of Congress. Karpoori Thakur continued campaigning in his familiar style. There were a total of 11 candidates in the election including Ramdev Rai and Karpoori Thakur. Except these two, everyone else’s bail was forfeited. The election results were in favor of Congress in the entire country. Congress got 404 seats across the country. Congress candidates won on 48 out of 54 seats in Bihar.
