There is no reduction in road accidents by imposing and recovering fines
IRTE Chairman Rohit Baluja further added that a committee constituted by the Supreme Court on road safety in the year 2017 has issued instructions to the police department officials across India to stop driving at high speed, jumping red lights, talking on mobile phone while driving, Describing the driving from the wrong side as dangerous, it was directed to increase the amount of the fine. Following the instructions of the Supreme Court committee, the Delhi Police got involved in collecting fines and in the year 2017, it collected about Rs 64.8 crore from fines. But, during the same period the death rate in road accidents increased to 1584. He didn’t pay attention to this. He said that in the year 2021, the Delhi Traffic Police recovered about Rs 493 crore from fines. However, this year the death toll in horrific road accidents came down to 1230. The decrease in the number of people who died in road accidents was recorded due to the Corona epidemic and the lockdown and curfew imposed during that time. He said that the pandemic broke the myth that road accidents come down by imposing fines and collecting fines. He said that behind road accidents other factors should also be added along with road engineering.
It is necessary to train the police to understand the elements of traffic violation
Rohit Baluja further said that today efforts are being made to improve road safety without understanding road and traffic engineering, which is essential for driving. He said that there is a need to give basic training to the police to understand the elements of traffic violations. Along with this, there is a need to make the drivers aware about the symbols placed on the side of the roads. He said that unless corrective measures are taken in a holistic manner, it is futile to do anything regarding road safety in such circumstances.
How will the deaths in road accidents be reduced?
KK Kapila, Emeritus President of the International Road Federation (IRF), said that 11 per cent of the road accidents occurring in the world happen in India. Along with this, India has also signed the UN declaration to reduce road accidents by 50 percent by the year 2030. However, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reduced this target year of the United Nations to 2025. IRF is focusing on road and vehicle engineering, education, enforcement, emergency services and road safety to reduce road deaths in India.
Road signs are not visible in Delhi
KK Kapila said that drivers in India take road signs lightly or ignore them, but road signs are not visible in Delhi. He said that road signs are not visible in Delhi. He said that however, road engineering signs, symbols, minor changes in the layout of road junctions prove to be very helpful in reducing road accidents.
