Highest expenditure is incurred on assembly elections

There are 4,500 assembly seats across the country. The cost of conducting their elections once is Rs 3 lakh crore. There are a total of 500 seats in the Municipal Corporation. One lakh crore rupees are spent on their elections. About Rs 4.30 lakh crore is spent on elections for 650 Zilla Parishad seats, 7,000 Mandal seats and 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayat seats.

The limit of expenditure in elections is up to Rs 70 lakh.

A candidate can spend between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 70 lakh in Lok Sabha elections. However, it depends on which state he is contesting from. In all other states except Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim (spending limit Rs 54 lakh), a candidate can spend a maximum of Rs 70 lakh on campaigning. This limit is 70 lakh for Delhi and 54 lakh for other union territories. The maximum expenditure limit for assembly elections is between Rs 20 lakh to Rs 28 lakh.

Election expenditure increased five times in the last five elections

Cash worth Rs 1760 crore seized last year

According to the report presented by the Election Commission on the assembly elections of five states in the year 2023, more than Rs 1760 crore was seized during this period. This amount is seven times more than the last seizure.
