Mahindra trademarks seven new names for 5-door Thar
The seven names that Mahindra has trademarked for the 5-door Thar include Armada, Cult, Rex, Rocks, Savana, Gladius and Centurion. These will be used in ‘Thar’ to reflect the larger 5 door body style. Of these, Armada is the only name which has considerable recall value. Whereas, all the others are completely new names.
Armada was first introduced in 1990
The Armada name was first introduced by Mahindra & Mahindra in the early 1990s as the then flagship product of the brand. It was specifically aimed at attracting urban buyers. This name was the first name of Bolero. Its design was directly inspired by the Jeep SUV and was a more premium alternative to the then underpowered Commander SUV. After this, in the year 2001, the name of Armada was changed to Bolero, which is on sale till date.

The design of Mahindra’s upcoming 5 door Thar Armada SUV will be completely different from the regular Thar and that is why this name is most appropriate and important for the company. The reason for this is that the price value of Armada is quite old. Conceptually it’s not too far from the original Armada. Apart from 5 doors, it is also expected to get hardtop.
Engine and Features
Recently, a 5-door Mahindra Thar has been seen in spy shots taken during testing. In this its design looks completely different from the 3 door Thar. Along with this, more features can be found in its interior. These include a large 10.25-inch touchscreen and a sunroof. It is likely to retain the existing 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines, mated to the same 6-speed manual and auto gearboxes.
Price and Launch
Mahindra’s upcoming 5 door Thar can be launched in the market in mid 2024. Its price is expected to be higher than the current 3-door Mahindra Thar. Its price in ex-showroom can be between Rs 16 to 20 lakh.
