Maruti Alto created history, 4.5 million Alto cars sold in 20 years

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of the longest running car in India Maruti Alto name comes to mind. It has sold over 4.5 million units in two decades of its existence so far.

Maruti introduced the “Alto” nameplate in India in 2000. In just four years since its launch, the Maruti hatchback started topping the sales charts. It then got a bigger 1-litre engine option with the introduction of the “Alto K10” moniker in 2010, at the same time when the carmaker also launched the CNG variants of the hatchback.
In 2012, Maruti brought a new generation Alto
In 2012, Maruti brought in a new generation Alto, which then got the credit “800” for the entry-level model. This was around the same time when the carmaker registered 2 million unit sales for the entry-level hatchback. Following the launch of the Alto 800, Maruti launched the second-generation Alto K10 in 2014, while the Alto nameplate crossed the 3 million sales milestone in the next two years and crossed one million unit sales in 2020 .

3rd generation Alto K10 to be introduced in 2022
The third generation Alto K10 was introduced in 2022, and is now the only Alto on sale after the Alto 800 was discontinued during the transition to BS6.2 emission norms. The current Alto gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, all four power windows, dual airbags and a reverse parking camera.
The existing Alto comes with idle-engine start/stop technology
The entry-level hatchback uses a 1-litre Dualjet petrol engine that makes 67PS and 89Nm, and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT. The same engine is also being offered in CNG with lesser outputs of 57PS and 82Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual only. The current Alto comes with idle-engine start/stop technology which helps in lower fuel consumption in traffic conditions.
Four wide variants of Maruti Alto K10
The Maruti Alto K10 is being offered in four wide variants – Std (O), LXi, VXi and VXi+ with prices ranging from Rs 3.99 lakh to Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is pitted against the Renault Kwid, while it can also be considered as an alternative to the Maruti S-Presso.
