Maruti Mini MPV: In an effort to maintain its strong position in the Indian market, leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has prepared a big product lineup scheme. Under this, updates to the existing model lineup include electric cars, hybrid and CNG variants. The Indian-Japanese automaker is preparing to launch three new products in the current financial year. This includes the next generation Swift hatchback, an updated Dezire compact sedan, and an electric SUV based on the EVX concept. Apart from this, the popular WagonR hatchback will soon get a mid-life update. Other models also include the launch of a micro SUV to challenge the Hyundai Exeter and a 3-row SUV based on the Grand Vitara.

How will the new mini MPV be designed?

According to media reports, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce a mini SUV based on the Japan-spec Suzuki Spacia by 2026. This 7-seater model will fall under sub-4 meters with a boxy and long design similar to its donor model. The upcoming Maruti mini MPV, codenamed YDB, may be slightly longer than its Japanese model, which measures 3,395 mm in length. To make the cost attractive, the company can remove sliding doors and some other features from it.

While details regarding features and engine specifications are still preliminary, the new Maruti Mini MPV is expected to be powered by the company’s new Z-series 1.2 liter petrol engine, which will be introduced in India with the next-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback. In Japan, the Suzuki Spacia is powered by a 658cc, 3-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology, available in turbo and non-turbo variants producing 64PS and 52PS respectively. This micro MPV gets a CVT gearbox with 2WD and 4WD options, while the India spec model can be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions.

Who will compete with?

Positioned below the Ertiga and XL6 in Maruti Suzuki’s product lineup, the new small MPV is expected to be sold through Nexa dealerships. After launch, this car will compete with Renault Triber, whose ex-showroom price ranges between Rs 6.33 lakh to Rs 8.97 lakh.
