New Delhi. Meta has announced the closure of cross-app communication chat between Instagram and Facebook Messenger.

The company did not provide any reason behind the move but it may be related to Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires Big Tech companies to offer interoperability between messaging platforms.

Starting mid-December 2023, users will no longer be able to chat with Facebook accounts on Instagram.

“Once cross-app communication is no longer available, you won’t be able to start new conversations or calls from Instagram with a Facebook account,” the company said in an update.

“Any existing chats you have with Facebook accounts on Instagram will remain read-only, even if these Facebook accounts are removed from the chat,” Meta said.

This means that you and other people with Instagram accounts won’t be able to send new messages in these chats.

Facebook accounts won’t be able to see your activity status or whether you’ve viewed any messages.

“Any of your existing chats with Facebook accounts will not move to your inbox on Facebook or Messenger,” the company said. “To continue conversations with Facebook accounts, you can start a new chat with them on Messenger or Facebook from your Facebook account.”

It’s possible that Meta is disconnecting this service’s cross-app chatting feature to better prepare for DMA-compliant interoperability within Messenger.
