Dhanbad: A large number of children are suffering from malnutrition in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. For proper care of such children, the state government has constructed Mall Nutrition Treatment Center (MTC) in three different blocks including Sadar Hospital of the district. Here, malnourished children are to be admitted and provided nutritious food along with proper medical facilities. MTC was started in Sadar Hospital two months ago, but at present the condition of this center is bad. Not a single child is admitted here. If we look at the statistics of the Health Department, only five children were treated in the MTC center located at Sadar Hospital in two months. Whereas, the number of malnourished children in the district is more than 30 percent. Dhanbad ranks 16th in the cases of malnourished children in the entire state.

Children not arriving as per health department
Dr. Rohit Gautam, nodal cum DRCHO of MTC operating in the district, said that such a situation has arisen due to non-availability of malnourished children. Sahiya Sathi and health workers working in the areas under all health centers have been instructed to identify malnourished children and bring them to the center. The number of malnourished children is good in the MTCs operating in Govindpur, Topchanchi and Tundi. An agreement has been signed with Tata to increase the number of malnourished children in Sadar Hospital. Under this, the company will identify malnourished children from their respective areas and send them to MTC located at Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Lack of awareness is the main cause of malnutrition
Dr. Rohit Gautam said that lack of awareness is a major reason for malnutrition. Mother’s milk is considered nectar, but according to the report, only 20.1 percent of children in Koyalanchal get mother’s milk within an hour of birth. According to doctors, children who drink mother’s milk within an hour of birth can avoid many diseases. Only mother’s milk is sufficient for children for six months. Children who do not get mother’s milk or get less of it for the first six months can become malnourished, weak and sick. Later such children also suffer from diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and allergy related diseases.
