This is a big step towards the smartphone giant’s goal of making the car by early next year.

However, the company reportedly needs permission from the Ministry of Industry and Information to start production of electric vehicles. The smartphone maker has already revealed its first electric car Modena, which is internally codenamed MS11. It is an electric sedan which is considered cheaper than Tesla Model S.

The report said that Xiaomi aims to enter China’s car manufacturing industry at a time when the world’s largest automobile market is grappling with issues including capacity constraints and falling demand. China has promoted price war in recent times. Moreover, once the company starts producing electric cars, Xiaomi will be the latest company to enter a segment where many technology giants around the world are trying their hand at becoming electric vehicle manufacturers. Global tech giants like Apple and Sony have already expressed their interest in making the car. Sony took a step forward by showcasing a prototype of its electric car, which it developed in collaboration with Honda.

Talking about Xiaomi’s car making ambition, the company had promised to invest $10 billion in the automobile business over a decade. The tech company, which intends to enter the EV market, aims to mass-produce its first cars in the first half of 2024. However, Xiaomi was waiting for approval from the authorities. The company has reportedly built a factory in Beijing with a production capacity of around 200,000 electric cars annually.

The report also states that Xiaomi aims to produce around 1,00,000 electric vehicles in 2024. Keeping this goal in mind, Xiaomi has reportedly started hiring workers for its electric vehicle plant since last week. It has been said in the report that Xiaomi has started preparing to start production in December. Interestingly, the company is reportedly planning to use thousands of its stores in China as showrooms for the upcoming electric cars.
