Sandeshkhali Violence: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court in the case of violence in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. In the petition, a request has been made to conduct a court-monitored investigation into the Sandeshkhali violence by CBI or SIT. The Supreme Court has agreed to consider listing this PIL.
Chief Justice asked this question to the petitioner
A request was made to immediately list the PIL before the bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. The Chief Justice asked, ‘Have you sent any e-mail (requesting urgent hearing)?’ When lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava, who filed the PIL, replied in the affirmative, the Chief Justice said, ‘I will consider it in the afternoon.’
Request to transfer the case outside Bengal
Srivastava has personally filed this petition, requesting compensation for the Sandeshkhali violence victims and action against West Bengal Police officials for alleged dereliction of duty. The petition has also requested to transfer the investigation and subsequent trial out of West Bengal.
On the lines of Manipur, a committee of three judges should investigate the Sandeshkhali violence.
Apart from this, like the Manipur violence case, an appeal has been made for investigation by a committee of three judges. Protests are taking place in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal against allegations of sexual exploitation of women by a local leader of Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool leader has been accused of land grabbing and sexual harassment
Many women of the area have accused the party’s strong local leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters of land grabbing and sexual harassment. People associated with Sheikh Shahjahan had allegedly attacked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials who had gone to raid in connection with the ration scam on January 5, after which Shahjahan is absconding.
