Washington. Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has admitted that the company’s Bing search engine is not as good as Google and is becoming Apple’s default search engine. This could help Bing grow in the global search market.
During a testimony in the historic US vs. Google antitrust trial late Monday, Nadella said he sees search as the biggest software category ever, The Verge reports.
“I thought Windows and Office were lucrative businesses until I saw Search,” he said. He said that if Apple switches to Bing, Microsoft is willing to give Apple all the economic benefits of the deal, and “it is prepared to invest up to $15 billion per year in the process.”
Nadella said he was willing to hide the Bing brand in Apple users’ search engines and respect any privacy wishes of the company. He was quoted as saying, “The default is the only thing that matters in terms of changes in user behavior.”
For Nadella, becoming Apple’s default search engine won’t be about money, at least not directly. “We need to be less greedy and more competitive,” he said during testimony.
When asked if Microsoft tried to become Apple’s default search engine, Nadella said yes but the effort was not successful. Not only are the economics of the Google deal extremely favorable to Apple, he said, but according to the report, Apple may also fear what Google would do if it lost its default status. Google also has very popular services like Gmail and YouTube.
Nadella said AI has the potential to shake up the market a bit, but he also believes it could “further cement Google’s dominance.” The US Justice Department alleges that Google, which has about 90 percent of the search market, has abused its search engine dominance to stifle competition and innovation.
