Spectrum Auction News : Preparations have intensified for the new spectrum auction for the telecom industry. The Department of Telecom (DoT) will this week approach the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to auction a set of radio waves as well as spectrum bands with permits expiring in 2024. If reports are to be believed, the Department of Telecom may conduct the auction in the March quarter of the current financial year.
DoT to send terms and conditions of auction to TRAI
The Department of Telecom will in a few days send the terms and conditions to TRAI for the auction of 37 GHz band and radio waves of telecom licenses coming up for renewal in 2024. According to Bhasha’s report, the Department of Telecom is expected to soon recommend auction guidelines for satellite communication spectrum, so that it can be included in the proposed auction for the March quarter.
Order for satellite communication spectrum soon
In the context of satellite communication spectrum, the auction of spectrum in the 600 MHz band is likely to include frequencies that were not sold in the 2022 auction. The government had offered spectrum in 10 bands, but no bids were received for airwaves in 600 MHz, 800 MHz. Nearly two-thirds of the bids were for 5G bands (3300 MHz and 26 GHz), while more than a quarter of the demand came in the 700 MHz band.
