Spotify set to make in-app lyrics a premium-only feature

San Francisco. Swedish music streaming company Spotify is testing making in-app lyrics a premium feature only in a bid to entice more users to sign up for its paid services.
Several users noticed that the in-app lyrics, which pop up below the playing song, were locked under a paywall.
Instead, they only saw a notification pop-up that read “Enjoy the song on Spotify Premium” with a link to sign up. Spotify told The Verge that the feature is still in testing phase.
Spotify’s co-head of global communications C.J. “We regularly conduct a variety of tests at Spotify, some of which lead the way for our broader user experience, and others simply serve as important learnings,” Stanley said.
“At this time we have no further news to share,” Stanley said.
It appears that the music streaming platform is looking to build in other types of features that users can pay for.
Spotify announced in July that it would increase its Premium subscription prices in several markets around the world. In the US, the price of its premium Individual plan has now gone up from $9.99 to $10.99, and the premium Duo plan has gone up from $12.99 to $14.99.
The premium family plan has now increased in price to $16.99 from $15.99, and the student plan will increase in price from $4.99 to $5.99.
In its latest earnings report, Spotify revealed that monthly users on its ad-supported tier grew 34 percent over the past year to 343 million.
The company’s monthly paying audience grew 17 percent to 220 million.
Spotify announced last month that it is rolling out its artificial intelligence-powered personalized music feature ‘DJ’ to more countries around the world.
