Maruti Suzuki Omni (1984-2019)
Maruti Suzuki’s Omni car also remained one of the popular long-running cars in India. The company stopped the production of this car due to safety reasons. Maruti Suzuki first launched Omni in the year 1984. It has been one of the most popular cars in India. Changes were made twice in this 34 year old car. The car received its first facelift in 1998, where its pillars were slightly widened along with headlamps. At the same time, in the year 2005, its design was slightly improved and a new dashboard was given in it.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy (1985-2019)
Gypsy is also included among the popular cars of Maruti Suzuki, which remained in India for a long time. It is based on the long wheelbase Suzuki Jimny SJ40/410 series. It was introduced by Maruti Suzuki in the year 1985. It was manufactured in Gurugram, Haryana. It was built primarily as an off-road vehicle and all models were built with 4WD. This car of Maruti was very popular among the Indian Armed Forces, Police and Army. Its production was officially discontinued in 2018 due to tightening carbon emissions and crash standards. However, Maruti has not completely shut down the production line and is still producing the Gypsy in batches specifically for the Indian Armed Forces. Maruti 800 (1986-2014)
Maruti Suzuki 800 is a city car, which was manufactured from 1983 to 2014. Its first generation (SS80) was based on the 1979 Suzuki Alto and had an 800 cc F8B engine. Therefore, 800 was added after Maruti as a surname. This car has been one of the most influential cars in India. Maruti produced approximately 2.87 million units of its 800 model car, of which 2.66 million units were sold in India. This car ruled India for about 31 years after Hindustan Ambassador.
HM Ambassador (1957–2014)
Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador car is the top car which has ruled for a long time in the homes of common man, government and VVIP people. Hindustan Motors first launched it in the year 1957 and it was manufactured by the company till 2014. This car has been modified twice in such a long period of time. The Ambassador car was based on the Morris Oxford Series III model, first built by Morris Motors Ltd in Cowley Oxford in the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1959. The Ambassador car was also called the king of Indian roads. On February 11, 2017, Hindustan Motors entered into an agreement with PSA Group for the sale of the Ambassador brand including its trademarks for Rs 80 crore. This alliance included two joint venture agreements between the companies of both the groups. The company has stopped its production since 2014.
Premier Padmini (1964–2000)
The Premier Padmini was manufactured in India under license by Fiat from 1964 to 2001 by Premier Automobiles Limited, a division of the Walchand Group. It was a four-seater saloon car. It was initially sold as Fiat 1100 Delight. After this, it was sold as Premier Padmini from 1974. In the Indian market, Padmini competed with Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador and Standard Herald. This popular car ruled the Indian car market for a long time and its popularity was at its peak during the 1970s and 80s. Many celebrities of that time including Bollywood superstar Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Aamir Khan had Premier Padmini. In common parlance it is known as Pad or Fiat. Padmini was named after Padmini, a 14th century princess. Padmini basically means Goddess Lakshmi sitting on a lotus. It was a common name for girls in India at that time. The premium Padmini car remained the lifeline of Mumbai for a long time and kept people traveling. It has been removed from the transport system in Mumbai from 30 October 2023.
