Hindustan Motors first launched it in the year 1957 and it was manufactured by the company till 2014. This car has been modified twice in such a long period of time. The Ambassador car was based on the Morris Oxford Series III model, first built by Morris Motors Ltd in Cowley Oxford in the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1959. The Ambassador car was also called the king of Indian roads. On February 11, 2017, Hindustan Motors entered into an agreement with PSA Group for the sale of the Ambassador brand including its trademarks for Rs 80 crore. This alliance included two joint venture agreements between the companies of both the groups. The company has stopped its production since 2014.

Premier Padmini (1964–2000)

The Premier Padmini was manufactured in India under license by Fiat from 1964 to 2001 by Premier Automobiles Limited, a division of the Walchand Group. It was a four-seater saloon car. It was initially sold as Fiat 1100 Delight. After this, it was sold as Premier Padmini from 1974. In the Indian market, Padmini competed with Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador and Standard Herald. This popular car ruled the Indian car market for a long time and its popularity was at its peak during the 1970s and 80s. Many celebrities of that time including Bollywood superstar Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Aamir Khan had Premier Padmini. In common parlance it is known as Pad or Fiat. Padmini was named after Padmini, a 14th century princess. Padmini basically means Goddess Lakshmi sitting on a lotus. It was a common name for girls in India at that time. The premium Padmini car remained the lifeline of Mumbai for a long time and kept people traveling. It has been removed from the transport system in Mumbai from 30 October 2023.
