CBG-Powered Maruti Suzuki Wago-R: The prices of petrol and diesel are skyrocketing all over the world including India. Crude oil prices are also continuously increasing due to the tantrums of OPEC countries and fights over petroleum products. Due to rising prices of petroleum products, it has become difficult for the common man to drive. However, electric vehicles are being promoted as an alternative to petrol and diesel, so that the common man can drive at less cost. The biggest reason behind promoting electric vehicles is to reduce environmental pollution. The amount of air pollution in the environment is increasing due to the use of petrol and diesel. Along with this, research is still being done in the country and the world as an alternative fuel to petrol and diesel. In this sequence, Suzuki, the Japanese subsidiary of Indian automobile manufacturer Maruti, has made a car running on traditional fuel dung and garbage. Maruti Suzuki has converted its old model WagonR into a car running on Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). The company has also exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show held in Tokyo in October last year. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will run on cow dung and garbage
Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR car displayed at the Japan Mobility Show runs on Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). CBG is prepared from garbage and cow dung. There is no need of petrol, diesel or CNG to run this car. Cow dung, traditionally used as fuel, is available in every city and village of India. Apart from this, cow dung is also available in large quantities in many countries of South-East Asia. Japanese car manufacturer Suzuki has prepared WagonR with CBG powered engine to use this traditional fuel in the car.
How is CBG prepared?
Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) is also a fuel used like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). CNG is obtained from petroleum sources. At the same time, CBG is prepared from cow dung, agricultural waste, sewage and municipal waste. Basically CBG is prepared after decomposing organic substances. CBG can also be used as a reliable alternative to conventional fuel. After the decomposition process of this organic matter, biogas is prepared in the form of gas like CNG by reducing the carbon dioxide content and increasing the level of methane. The main difference between CNG and CBG is the source of fuel, as CNG is produced from natural gas.
India will produce 15 million tonnes of biogas every year
CBG is obtained from biological sources, so the waste product generated after decomposition can be used for agricultural purposes. In the year 2020, the then Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said that by 2023, about 15 million tonnes of biogas will be produced in the country from 5,000 decomposition plants. For this, the government has planned an investment of about Rs 200 crore. This step will help India in reducing fuel imports. At present, India imports large quantities of CNG to meet its domestic demand.
WagonR CBG is made in India only
The biggest thing is that the CBG-powered WagonR car which Suzuki has displayed at the Japan Mobility Show, has been developed in India itself. Maruti Suzuki is working on the CBG edition of the WagonR car from the year 2022. Maruti Suzuki India introduced the flex-fuel WagonR prototype in December 2022, which could run on E20 fuel. Maruti Suzuki India Chairman RC Bhargava says that instead of relying only on electric vehicles, the use of hybrid technology, CBG and CNG will help in reducing the carbon footprint in the country.
