Underwater metro affects ferry service, passengers reduced by 25%

According to sources, the number of passengers in the ferry service on Howrah-Babughat, Howrah-Fairley (Millennium Park) route has decreased by about 25 percent. With the commencement of metro service from Howrah to Sealdah and Salt Lake, the number of steamer passengers may further reduce. Officials of the Hooghly River Waterways Transport Committee are worried about this. In such a situation, the income of waterway transport may decrease.
Ferry service currently closed on two routes
Ferry services are operated on eight routes under the leadership of Hooghly River Waterways Transport Committee. These routes include Howrah to Golabari-Ahiritola-Shobhabazar-Baghbazar, Howrah to Armenian Ghat, Howrah to Fairlie, Howrah to Babughat, Babughat to Ramakrishnapur-Shivpur, Nazirganj-Matiaburj, Bauria-Bajbaj, Gadiara-Geunkhali, Nurpur. At present the ferry service on Howrah-Fairly route is closed. The reason for this is said to be lack of lunch. Ferry service in Babughat-Ramakrishnapur-Shivpur route is also closed after the incident of breaking of jetty. There has been a decline in the number of passengers in Howrah to Babughat and Howrah to Millennium Park-Fairlie routes.

Officials are planning how the compensation will be done.
Officials of Hooghly River Waterway Transport Committee believe that Howrah-Shobhabazar, Baghbazar routes have the highest number of passengers. Increasing the number of ferry services on these routes can compensate for the decline in the number of passengers. The number of passengers may increase due to more ferry services on those routes. Besides, the officials are also thinking about other alternative arrangements to keep the ferry service running. So that in the routes where the number of passengers is decreasing, the number of lunch decreases and ferry service can be started in other new routes also. This is under review.
