How tableaus are selected

Tableaux are an important part of the Republic Day celebrations organized at India Gate and Dutvapath in New Delhi. When these tableaux pass on the duty path in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan during the Republic Day Parade, they showcase the diverse culture and traditions of the states and union territories of India. There is a big process of selecting tableaux. It is selected by a committee of experts, which includes eminent persons from various disciplines like art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, choreography etc. The panel of experts is directed by the Ministry of Defence. For this, the government receives proposals from almost all the states and union territories, but they are evaluated in meetings by the expert committee. These meetings take place in several rounds. For this, the application process starts every year from the month of September.

How are proposals scrutinized?

The proposals given by the states and union territories for the tableaux to be included in the Republic Day Parade are examined on the basis of their theme, concept, design and beauty. Its selection and evaluation process is completed in several stages. First its sketch, design and performance are evaluated. For this, several rounds of talks are held between the state, union territory, departments and ministries with the committee of experts. If the tableau proposal does not fit the government’s standards, then the proposal is rejected.

Which vehicles are used for tableaux?

During the Republic Day Parade, tractors are used to pull the tableaux on the duty route in Delhi, while the tableaux are decorated on big trailers.
