During a conversation with the media, Prakash Nalawade had said that when Pramod Mahajan entrusted him with the responsibility of making the chariot, he said that he had never prepared a chariot. On this Mahajan said that you do not have to do anything. Shanti Dev will prepare the design for you. You have to prepare the chariot accordingly. He told that Pramod Mahajan had already prepared the outline of the form of the chariot, the vehicles and items used in the chariot, the structure of the chariot etc.

Prakash Nalawade told the media that within two hours of the conversation, the DSM Toyota mini truck arrived in our workshop. Only 10 days were given to make the chariot. He said that the yatra was to start from 25th September and we had to prepare it and send it to Gujarat by 22nd September. There were many challenges. Making the chariot was not easy. The chariot had to pass through many rough roads, villages and hilly areas. That is why it was decided that wood would not be used in the chariot. Only iron leaves will be used to strengthen the chariot. Everything needed was available within an hour.

He said that during the time when we were preparing Rath, BR Chopra’s Mahabharata TV serial was quite popular. As soon as people thought of chariot, the thought of horses came to their mind. In the chariot of Mahabharata, the horses were at the front. One day art director Shanti Dev said that lion shapes would be placed on both sides of the chariot. I asked, there are horses in the chariot, then why this lion? On this he said that we are Hindu lions and the lion is going to his Lord Ram. He drew a lion on iron leaf and gave it to me to cut the design. The work of cutting the picture made on iron leaf had to be done with utmost precision, because if even the slightest mistake was made then the entire design would get spoiled.

When the crowd gathered to see the chariot

He said that when we were making the chariot of Lal Krishna Advani, the workshop in Chembur had become a place of worship. People used to come from far away areas to see this chariot. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers used to watch for hours. Big leaders of BJP also used to come daily. Many big BJP leaders including Pramod Mahajan, Murli Manohar Joshi used to come to the workshop at night to inspect the work. After hard work, within 10 days, Toyota’s mini truck was successfully transformed into a huge beautiful chariot.
