Supreme Court In an order dated December 15, 2016, it had said that there should not be liquor shops within a radius of 500 meters along the national highways. The main reason behind this order was that the possibility of road accidents increases due to liquor shops on the highway.

Important event behind the order

An important incident behind this order was that in 2016, 12 people died in a road accident in Haryana. In this accident it was found that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. This incident inspired the Supreme Court to consider this issue.

Hearing was held on several petitions regarding closure of wine shop.

Many petitions were filed for this order. One of these petitions was filed by the people of Punjab, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The petitioners said that the presence of liquor shops on the highway increases the risk of drunk driving. This increases the number of road accidents. While hearing the petitions, the Supreme Court said that the possibility of road accidents increases due to liquor shops on the highway. The court said that drunk driving affects the reaction time and decision making ability of drivers. This increases the possibility of accidents.

License is not given to open a wine shop in NH

The Supreme Court said in its order that new licenses will not be given for liquor shops within a radius of 500 meters along the national highways. Also, the existing licenses will also be extended till March 31, 2017.

Some concession to Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim

Let us tell you that while giving the verdict, the Supreme Court had said that liquor shops should be closed within 500 meters of National and State Highways. Liquor should not be allowed to be served in hotels, restaurants and bars located within this area. The court had exempted only Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim from this decision in this case, because the population there is less than 20,000. In these states, liquor shops should be kept away from the highway within a radius of 220 meters. This decision was taken by the court in view of the accidents occurring due to drunk driving.

Drink and drive increases the risk of accidents

Drinking and driving significantly increases the chances of road accidents. Alcohol affects drivers’ reaction time and decision-making abilities. This increases the possibility of accidents. According to a study, drinking and driving increases the chances of accidents by two to three times. The study also found that drunk driving increases the severity of accidents. Having a wine shop on the National Highway can encourage people to drink and drive. This increases the possibility of road accidents.
