World’s first car to run on 100% ethanol launched in India, Nitin Gadkari unveiled

New Delhi : Toyota Motor has launched the world’s first ethanol-powered car in the Indian car market. It is equipped with flex fuel engine. The model, based on the carmaker’s popular MPV Innova Highcross, was unveiled on August 29 at an event presided over by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Electric flexus fuel Innova Highcross will not only use alternative fuel, but will also be able to generate electric power. This is a car that will be able to run in electric mode as well. The electrified Innova Highcross Flex Fuel is a prototype model that has been updated to meet the new BS-VI emission norms.
MPV Innova Highcross car will run on ethanol
The Toyota Innova Highcross flex-fuel MPV will run entirely on ethanol, which is a fuel derived from plants. Ethanol has been given an E100 grade, which indicates that the car runs on a completely alternative fuel. The MPV will also feature a lithium-ion battery pack, which will be capable of generating enough power to help the car run on EV mode. As of now, there is no confirmation on when the production model of the electrified Innova Highcross flex-fuel will hit the roads.

The flex-fuel module of the Innova Highcross OS is slightly different from the hybrid model of the MPV currently sold in India. The engine has been tuned to run on E100 grade ethanol and the fuel tank and fuel pipe have been fitted. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit is also used in the standard Innova Highcross, mated to E85 fuel. The spark plugs and piston rings of the MPV have been changed.

Toyota has also added a cold-start system, which allows it to deliver power even in conditions as cold as minus 15 degree Celsius. The Innova Highcross flex-fuel MPV also uses a self-charging lithium-ion battery, which can also be used to drive the MPV in EV-only mode. The standard Innova Highcross Hybrid MPV may generate 181 Bhp power and return a fuel economy of 23.24 kmpl. Toyota says the flex-fuel model could deliver 30 to 50 percent more efficiency.
Ethanol cars will reduce pollution
Union minister Nitin Gadkari has been advocating the use of alternative fuels to reduce costly imports of crude oil, which is processed to produce conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel. The introduction of alternative fuel aims to reduce pollution and also reduce India’s carbon emissions in the process. During the program, Gadkari said that 40 percent of the pollution in our country is caused by vehicles. The residents of Delhi have to face the effects of vehicular pollution.
What is the goal of the government
India’s push for biofuels, or alternative clean fuels, gained momentum last year when the Center introduced petrol blended with ethanol. India aims to achieve 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025. In March last year, Toyota Motor launched Mirai, India’s first all-hydrogen electric vehicle, as part of its pilot project with the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT). The Toyota Mirai FCEV is one of the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles and runs on pure hydrogen generated electricity. It is also considered a true zero-emission vehicle, as the car only emits water from the tailpipe.
