Arjan Singh Birth Anniversary: ​​Arjan Singh is the only officer of the Indian Air Force who was awarded five star rank in the year 2002. This post is equivalent to the post of Field Marshal of the Indian Army. During his Air Force service, Arjan Singh flew 60 different types of fighter aircraft. Arjan Singh has played a very important role in making the Indian Air Force the fourth largest and most powerful air force in the world.

Selected for pilot training at the age of 19

Arjan Singh was born on April 15, 1919 in Lyallpur, undivided Punjab, which is currently in Pakistan. In the year 1938, at the age of just 19, he was selected for pilot training in the Indian Air Force. During that time the command of the Indian Air Force was in the hands of the British.

In the year 1944, Arjan Singh was made the squadron leader of the Air Force. He led his team against the Japanese Air Force in Burma in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) by the Commonwealth for his services during the Second World War. After the independence of his country, on August 15, 1947, Arjan Singh got the opportunity to lead the flypast of 100 Indian Air Force aircraft over the Red Fort in Delhi.

In the year 1949, Arjan Singh was made Air Officer Commanding of Operational Command. This was later called Western Air Command. On August 1, 1964, Arjan Singh was made the Chief of the Air Force. Shortly after this, the time of India-Pakistan war of 1965 came. In this war, Arjan Singh efficiently led the Indian Air Force and defeated Pakistan. He remained the Chief of the Air Force till July 15, 1969. Meanwhile, in the year 1965, he was also honored with Padma Vibhushan and was also made Air Chief Marshal.

When Pakistan attacked India from Akhnoor in 1965 with the aim of separating Kashmir from India, the Indian Air Force gave a befitting reply to the Pakistanis. There came an occasion when he himself wanted to enter Pakistan and carry out bombings, because he was an expert in flying fighter planes, but being the Chief of the Air Force, he did not get the permission of the Defense Minister. Meanwhile, the decision for ceasefire was taken.

Court martial was held, but could not take action

When the British were handling the Air Force, Arjan Singh once had to face court martial. He flew very low over a house in Kerala in February 1945. When the Action Committee asked him the reason for doing this, he said that he did this to boost the morale of the training pilots. At that time it was the time of World War II. In such a situation, after his argument, the British officials could not take any action against him. The trainee pilot with him was Dilbagh Singh, who later became Air Chief Marshal.

After retiring on July 15, 1969, Arjan Singh was India’s Ambassador to many countries including Switzerland. He was also High Commissioner to Kenya and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi from 1989 to 1990. Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh died in 2017 at the age of 98.
