Tashkent: India’s star boxers Deepak Kumar, Mohd Hussamuddin and Nishant Dev ended their campaign at the ongoing IBA Men’s World Boxing Championship 2023 in Tashkent with bronze medals. Two Indian boxers, Deepak and Nishant, lost their respective semi-final bouts on Friday, while Hussamuddin was given a walkover due to injury. With three bronze medals won by Hussamuddin, Deepak and Nishant, India finished joint fourth in the medal tally of the prestigious global tournament. Hosts Uzbekistan finished first with nine medals while Cuba and Russia finished second with six medals each and Kazakhstan third with five medals. Displaying unwavering composure, 2019 Asian Games silver medalist Deepak (51 kg) lost 3-4 to two-time world bronze medalist Bilal Benama of France in the semi-finals after a bout review but before that Deepak put up a tough fight against his opponent. The Hisar-born boxer started the bout cautiously and won the first round 2-3, and then showed immense flexibility to come back and win the second round with the same scoreline.

Both the boxers played a very close game in the final round but in the end it was the French boxer who won the fight on points and held a slight edge over Deepak.

Like Deepak, Nishant (71kg) too lost 2-5 after a review of his bout against defending Asian champion Aslanbek Shimbergenov of Kazakhstan. The 22-year-old Nishant displayed a dynamic and aggressive approach throughout the bout, but despite his best efforts, failed to take down the Kazakh boxer.

Meanwhile, two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Hussamuddin was unfortunately given a walkover due to a knee injury sustained in the quarterfinals and had to settle for a bronze medal in his maiden World Championship campaign.

Deepak, Hussamuddin and Nishant have etched their names in the Indian boxing history books as three of the country’s ten World Championship medal winners so far after their stellar performances in this tournament. It was also the first time that India won three medals in a single edition of the tournament.

538 boxers from 107 countries participated in this prestigious global tournament. Among them are many Olympic and World Championship medal winning boxers. Each of the bronze-medal winners will be awarded a US$50,000 prize.
