Strandja Memorial Lovlina disqualified, Nikhat and Sakshi win in Strandja Memorial

Sophia. Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) of India crashed out of the 75th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament after losing by disqualification against Ireland’s O’Rourke Oife in the first round here on Monday. After one minute and 18 seconds of play in the third round of the pre-quarterfinal match, the referee disqualified Lovlina for the third time for holding the opponent’s player too much.

26-year-old defending world champion Lovlina, who has qualified for the Paris Olympics, won the first two rounds 3-2 but lost one point each in both the rounds, due to which she was trailing before the three-minute third round. Two-time world champions Nikhat Zareen (50kg) and Sakshi Choudhary (57kg) started their campaigns with wins in contrasting styles. Nikhat, who has qualified for the Paris Olympics, recorded a close 3-2 win over Mongolia’s Oyuntsetseg Yesugen.

She will face Lakhdiri Wasila of France in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Sakshi, on the other hand, defeated Selmouni Chahira of Algeria with her fast movements and surprise attacks. They dominated the match throughout and secured a comfortable 5-0 win via unanimous decision to advance to the quarter-finals. She will face Mamazonova Khumorabonu of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Asian Games bronze medalist Preeti Pawar (54kg) lost 2-3 to Ireland’s Fay Niamh. Manisha (60kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (66kg) will face France’s Zidani Amina and Sonvico Amelie respectively on Monday. Late on Sunday night, Jugnu (86kg) registered a tough 3-2 win over Kocharyan Ashot of Ukraine in the pre-quarterfinals. Now on Thursday, he will face Jalolov Samandar of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals.
