Aayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda to lead India in World Junior Championships

New Delhi: Aayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda will spearhead the Indian challenge at the BWF World Junior Championships 2023 to be held in the US from September 25. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) made this announcement on Monday. The BAI selected the 16-member squad after trials held from July 26 to 29 in the national capital. BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra said, “The test was extremely competitive. Ever since we made trials mandatory for such international events, we are seeing many new faces. We are extremely proud of the names that have made it to the final squad. We are confident that these young shuttlers will give their best and perform beyond their potential to make the country proud.”
Odisha Open 2022 champion Unnati Hooda will lead India’s campaign in the girls’ singles, while Tara Shah (world number seven) and Devika Sihag (national number seven) will also feature in the event. Two-time U-19 All India Junior Ranking champion Aayush Shetty will lead the boys’ team after topping the selection trials. He will also be accompanied by Tushar Suveer and Lokesh Reddy.
The boys’ doubles team includes the exciting pairing of India’s junior number one Nicholas Nathan Raj-Tushar Suvir and Divyam Arora-Mayank Rana. In the girls’ doubles category, India will be represented by the pair of Radhika Sharma-Tanvi Sharma and Vennala K-Sriyanshi Valishetty. Samarveer-Radhika Sharma and Satwik Reddy K-Vaishnavi Khadkekar will represent India’s mixed doubles challenge.
The BWF World Junior Championships will begin with the mixed team championship on September 25 and the singles event from October 2.
