New Delhi: ‘Before going to bed, look at yourself in the mirror and ask whether I gave my best performance?’, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra told shooters preparing to perform well in the upcoming Paris Games here on Sunday.
Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist, answered questions from the shooters and shared his experiences of shooting on the Olympic stage. Shooters are now busy preparing for the last three months and in this session organized at Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Bindra said that success is not a one-time thing.
He said, “Doing the right things continuously day and night leads to success.” ,
Asked about disciplining himself, Bindra said, “You have to be completely honest with yourself and every day before going to sleep, look at yourself in the mirror and ask, did I do my best? If the answer is yes then you will finally get the result. ,
India has secured a total of 19 quotas in rifle, pistol and shotgun for the Paris Olympics, which is the highest so far.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) organized the session ahead of the first batch of Indian shooters leaving for Europe overnight for equipment testing. Three such batches will leave in April. The three-member women’s air pistol team and shotgun team will take part in the final Olympic qualifiers in Rio and Doha respectively.
The first of four National Olympic Selection Trials for rifle and pistol shooters will be held here in April. This will be the first time that national trials will be conducted to select the rifle and pistol Olympic teams.
When Bindra was asked what advice he would give to the young Abhinav of the past, he said, “I believe that I have not been able to achieve my full potential. I wish I was more balanced in life and had more hobbies. I had isolated myself. ,
“I would tell myself to be a little gentler on myself,” he said. I wish I could do that if I didn’t pat myself on the back when I achieved my goals. ,
Bindra said, “I think if you go back to the shooting range then you can recover better and be mentally stronger for the competition.” ,
Talking about some special preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games, he said, “This was my fourth Olympics so I was successful in keeping myself detached from the outcome. I was completely focused on the process. I wanted to do my best on every single shot. I didn’t think about winning or losing. I was successful in just being in the moment because the truth is to be in the moment. ,
