Aditi became the youngest world champion in the compound category, Deotale won gold in the men’s category

Less than two months after winning the junior world title, India’s 17-year-old Aditi Swamy became the youngest senior world champion by defeating Mexico’s Andrea Becerra in the compound women’s final of the World Archery Championships on Saturday. She is the first player from the country to win individual gold in this event. Ojas Deotale won the title in the men’s compound event with a perfect score of 150 as India ended their campaign with the best performance ever. India won three gold and one bronze medal in it. The calm and patient Devtale, who hails from Nagpur, Maharashtra, defeated Lukasz Przybylski of Poland by a single point in a thrilling final match. While the compound archers performed brilliantly, the recurve archers at the Olympics were a complete failure and returned empty-handed. Both Aditi and Deotale train at the same academy in Satara under coach Praveen Sawant.

Aditi, a Class 12 student from Satara, won the Under-18 title at the youth championship in Limerick in July. She beat the Mexican by two points in the final here with 149 out of a possible 150 points. Andrea, seeded 16th at the Championships, defeated several heavyweights on her way to the final, including a pre-quarterfinal win over defending champion Sara Lopez. Andrea faced a tough fight from the start in the final from the sixth seeded Indian. Aditi’s opening three arrows hit the center of the target to take a 30-29 lead in the first round. He continued the momentum and repeated this performance in the next three rounds to open up a three-point lead. In the last round, he hit one target of 9 points while collecting 10-10 points from the other two, collected a total of 149 points. Andrea could only score 147 points. This is his second gold medal in this competition. Aditi, along with Preneet Kaur and Jyoti Surekha Vennam, won India’s maiden World Archery Championships gold medal by winning the compound women’s team final on Friday.

Aditi had earlier defeated Sanne de Laat of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals and Jyoti 149-145 in the semifinals. Aditi told PTI after this performance, “Just wanted to win the first gold for India and nothing else was coming to mind.” He said, “I knew she was very experienced and such an archer which I follow. I just focused on my archery and everything else fell into place.” She said, “I am very proud, I wanted to listen to 52 seconds of the national anthem being played at the World Championships. This is just the beginning. We have to participate in the Asian Games and I want to win gold for the country there. I want to win gold for the country in the team event as well.” Aditi said, “It is really great that I became world champion at the age of 17. I would like to thank all my supporters and all the people of India who helped me become the world champion. Jyoti, however, won the bronze medal. He shot a perfect 150 to beat Turkey’s Ipek Tomruk by four points in the third place play-off. Jyoti said, “It is not a matter of much despair.

Finally, I have managed to win gold in the team event this time.” Jyoti now has one gold, four silver and three bronze medals from three seasons at the World Archery Championships. In the afternoon session, Deotale capped off the campaign for India by winning the gold. The match between Devtale and his rival from Poland was very close. Both had the same perfect 90 points after the first three rounds. Even after this, Deotale continued to shoot 10 points and scored 150 out of 150 points. Przybylski succumbed to the pressure and hit a nine-pointer. With this he had to be satisfied with the silver medal. “It is no coincidence and it is the result of strong teamwork, focus on sports science and 100 per cent faith in our technical team,” Archery Association of India general secretary Pramod Chandurkar told PTI.
