Berlin: Less than two months after winning the junior world title, India’s 17-year-old Aditi Swami She became the youngest senior world champion by defeating Mexico’s Andrea Becerra in the compound women’s final of the World Archery Championships here on Saturday. She is the first player of the country to win individual gold in this event. Ojas Devtale won the title in the men’s compound event with a perfect score of 150, giving India the best performance to end its campaign. India won three gold and one bronze medal in this.

The calm and patient Ojas Deotale, who hails from Nagpur, Maharashtra, defeated Lukasz Przybylski of Poland by one point in a thrilling final match. While the archers of the compound class performed brilliantly, the archers of the recurve class involved in the Olympics were a complete failure and returned empty-handed. Both Aditi and Devtale train at the same academy in Satara under coach Praveen Sawant. Aditi, a Class 12 student from Satara, won the under-18 title at the youth championship in Limerick in July. She beat the Mexican player by two points in the final here with 149 points out of a possible 150 points.

Andrea, seeded 16th at the championships, defeated several heavyweights on her way to the final, including defeating defending champion Sarah Lopez in the pre-quarterfinals. In the final, Andrea faced a tough challenge from the sixth seeded Indian player from the very beginning. Aditi’s initial three arrows hit the center of the target, giving her a 30-29 lead in the first round. Continuing the rhythm, he repeated this performance in the next three rounds and took a three-point lead. In the last round, he hit one target of nine points, while collecting 10-10 points from the remaining two, collected a total of 149 points. Andrea could only score 147 points.

This is his second gold medal in this competition. Aditi, along with Preneet Kaur and Jyoti Surekha Vennam, won India’s maiden World Archery Championships gold medal by winning the compound women’s team final on Friday. Aditi had earlier defeated Sanne de Laat of the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and Jyoti in the semi-finals by 149-145. After this performance, Aditi told PTI-language, ‘Just wanted to win the first gold for India and some thinking was not coming to mind.’

Aditi said, ‘I knew that she is very experienced and she is such an archer whom I follow. I just focused on my archery and everything else fell into place. He said, ‘I am very proud, I wanted to listen to 52 seconds of the national anthem played in the World Championship. This is just the beginning. We have to participate in the Asian Games and I want to win gold for the country there. I want to win gold for the country in the team event as well. Aditi said, ‘It is really great that I became world champion at the age of 17. I want to thank all my supporters and all the people of India who helped me become the world champion.

Jyoti, however, won the bronze medal. He shot a perfect 150 to beat Turkey’s Ipek Tomruk by four points in the third place play-off. Jyoti said, ‘It is not a matter of much despair. Finally, I have been able to win gold in the team event this time. Jyoti now has one gold, four silver and three bronze medals in three seasons of the World Archery Championships. In the afternoon session, Deotale clinched the campaign for India by winning the gold.

The match between Devtale and his rival from Poland was very close. After the first three rounds, both had the same perfect 90 marks. Even after this, Deotale continued to hit 10 points accurately and scored 150 out of 150 points. Przybylski succumbed to the pressure and hit a nine-pointer. With this he had to be satisfied with the silver medal. “It is no coincidence and it is the result of strong teamwork, focus on sports science and 100 per cent faith in our technical team,” Archery Association of India general secretary Pramod Chandurkar told PTI.
