Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and decided to bowl first, after which Nizat Masood got Zakir Hasan (01) caught by wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai on his first ball of the second over of the innings. Najmul and Mahmudul then decorated the innings. Najmul completed his fourth Test half-century in just 58 balls. Mahmudul, playing his first Test since June last year, batted with composure to complete his half-century in 102 balls. Maintaining his aggressive attitude, Najmul completed his century in 118 balls. Part-time leg-spinner Rahmat Shah broke the partnership by getting Mahmudul caught in the slips by Ibrahim Zadran.
Debutant Masood (2/67) also got Mominul Haque caught by the wicketkeeper at the score of 15 runs. Masood also bowled Nazmul but it was a no ball. However, Najmul could not take advantage of this and returned to the pavilion after being caught by left-arm spinner Amir Hamza. Liton Das, who was captaining Test for the first time, fell to left-arm spinner Zaheer Khan, reducing the team’s score from 218 for one to 290 for five.
