Birmingham | Australia captain Pat Cummins revealed that Australia had a good chance of victory when he came out to bat on the fifth day of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.
Cummins’ match-winning innings came when Australia needed 72 runs to win with three wickets in hand. Soon after, he saw the dismissal of Alex Carey, who tried unsuccessfully to hit Joe Root straight down the ground.
Despite this setback, the Australian captain displayed remarkable composure, remaining unbeaten on 44 off 73 balls and eventually leading his side to victory.
Cummins said at the post-match presentation ceremony, “Looks pretty good, the wicket wasn’t too threatening. I thought it was within our grasp. Both the teams talked about their styles and that’s the beauty of the series.” . We will both play to our strengths. I don’t know which one is better but it makes for good entertainment.”
Cummins was all praise for Usman Khawaja, who was awarded the player of the match for his brilliant knocks of 141 and 65.
Cummins said, “Incredible composure, played his own ways, didn’t get caught by anyone. Has been excellent over the years. To have someone in the middle play like that and let others play around him. I really I am happy for him. It was a good wicket experience for him. Everyone else tried to play their little part.”
With this win, Australia have taken an early 1-0 lead in the five-Test series. The second Test will begin on June 28 at Lord’s.
