Chennai, 7th August (Hindustan Times). The Indian men’s hockey team on Sunday sealed the top spot in the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament after thrashing Malaysia 5-0 in their round-robin encounter at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai. After the win, captain Harmanpreet Singh said that this is how the team is preparing for the Asian Games.
Earlier, India played a 1-1 draw with Japan on Friday. They started the campaign with a big 7-2 win over China on Thursday at home. India are at the top spot with a total of seven points from three matches with two wins and one draw. Malaysia are in second place with a total of six points from three matches with two wins and one loss.
In the post-match interview, Harmanpreet Singh said, “If you see, this is how we are preparing for the Asian Games, we are getting good matches before the Asian Games. It is good for us as well as others. We can work on what we learned in this tournament. This is a good opportunity to play against Asian countries before the Asian Games.
“Definitely I think our first game was also good because we scored a lot of goals. We are hoping to maintain a clean sheet. The second match was tough for the team. Japan played really well that day. What we learned from our last game was to keep our defense strong and capitalize on the opportunities that came our way.
Harmanpreet Singh said, “There is a sense of pride when you wear the jersey to represent the country. This is the biggest honor. It is the support of our family. The biggest thing is that I am representing the country.
He said, “The teams are good. After playing against European countries, suddenly playing against Asian countries takes time to adjust. We know what we have to do and where to work with or without the ball. We will discuss it in the team meeting.
