AHMEDABAD: After Chennai Super Kings’ stupendous win in IPL 2023, victorious skipper MS Dhoni has left open the question of whether he will play in the next season. There has been speculation about Dhoni’s possible retirement since the start of the 2023 IPL. It was being said that this season would be his last.

Under the leadership of Dhoni, CSK won their fifth IPL title here on Monday.

Gujarat Titans scored 214 runs losing 4 wickets in 20 overs thanks to the brilliant batting of Sai Sudarshan (96) and Wriddhiman Saha. But in the rain-shortened match, Chennai needed 171 runs in 15 overs.

CSK was looking in trouble. He needed 13 runs in the last over. Mohit Sharma bowled four brilliant deliveries but Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and a four in the last two balls to seal a thrilling win for CSK.

After the win, when the CSK captain came for the post-match chat, Harsha Bhogle asked him directly. We met again, like we often do after winning the title. Should I ask you or are you going to tell me yourself?

On this Dhoni said, ‘It would be better that you ask and then I will answer.’

Bhogle said: When you won the trophy last time, I asked you what legacy you left behind at CSK. You said ‘I haven’t given up on it yet.

Dhoni said, looking for answers? If you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But with all the love and affection I’ve been shown wherever I’ve been this year, it would have been easier for me to say ‘thank you so much’. But the tough job for me is to work hard for the next 9 months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL. A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be like a gift for me, it is not easy for me but it is a gift.

Dhoni openly admitted that it brought tears to his eyes when the crowd chanted his name while playing the first match of the 2023 Indian Premier League against the Titans at the same venue.

You get emotional only because this is the last part of my career, it started from here and when I landed in the first game, everyone was calling my name. My eyes welled up and I just stood in the dugout for a while. I realized that I want to enjoy it.

“It was the same in Chennai, it was my last match there, but it would be nice to come back and do whatever I can,” he said. I think they love me for who I am, that I am grounded. I try not to be something I’m not. Just keep it simple.

The CSK skipper has achieved a significant feat by becoming the first cricketer to feature in 250 IPL matches. Also, he has captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to an impressive 10 IPL finals, emerging victorious in five of them.

Significantly, Dhoni reached the IPL final in 2017 representing Rising Pune Supergiants.(IANS)
