Ahmedabad franchise in Women’s Premier League renamed as Gujarat Giants

New Delhi | The Ahmedabad franchise in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be known as ‘Gujarat Giants’, owned by Adani Sportsline. This was announced by the sports arm of Adani Group on Wednesday. Adani Group on Wednesday bought the Ahmedabad franchise with the highest bid of Rs 1289 crore in the auction conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The first season of WPL is likely to be held in March this year, with the player auction likely to take place in February.

Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises, said the Indian women’s cricket team has been performing exceptionally well and the Women’s Cricket League is an important step towards creating more opportunities for cricketers through the sport.

The Gujarat Giants cricket franchise in the upcoming Women’s Premier League has joined the family of successful Adani Sportsline teams like the Gulf Giants in the ongoing ILT20 in the UAE and the ‘Gujarat Giants’ in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals (RR), the IPL 2008 champions congratulated the BCCI for bringing the WPL closer to turning into a reality.

“We would like to wish all the successful bidders the very best in this new beginning and also congratulate the BCCI for launching the Women’s Premier League. This is a big step forward for Indian cricket, and will prove to be a game changer.

The franchise also bid for a team in the WPL, but did not make it to the top five winning bidders.

Apart from Adani Sportsline, Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd acquired the Mumbai franchise with a bid of Rs 912.99 crore. Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd, JSW GMR Cricket Pvt Ltd and Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd won the remaining three teams, Bangalore, Delhi and Lucknow with winning bids of Rs 901 crore, Rs 810 crore and Rs 757 crore respectively.
